Project River Light is a bold humanitarian effort to bring dignity, structure, and opportunity to some of the most underserved communities in Lagos, Nigeria. Along the riverbanks, tens of thousands of people live in makeshift shelters—corrugated metal shacks and tarp-covered huts balanced precariously on stilts or driftwood. These are not just temporary shelters; for many, they are generational homes. Without reliable access to clean water, electricity, healthcare, or education, residents face daily survival challenges that most of the world cannot imagine.
In Nigeria, there is no safety net—no food stamps, no universal healthcare, no public housing. If you are born into poverty, your survival depends entirely on informal work, personal resilience, and the charity of others. Illness, pregnancy, or injury can mean disaster. For many living along the river, a single medical bill or a lost day of labor can unravel an entire family's fragile balance. Children grow up without access to schools, medical care, or safe spaces to play. Yet within these communities are incredible stories of perseverance, resourcefulness, and untapped potential.
Project River Light aims to change that narrative. Our vision includes building a stilt-supported community hub on the river itself: a space that brings together a floating clinic, a food co-op, solar-powered lighting, and a multi-use pavilion for schooling and public gathering. This will not be a handout—but a foundation for health, hope, and self-reliance. By bringing essential services directly to the heart of this forgotten population, we are turning light—both literal and symbolic—into a lifeline. This is more than infrastructure; it’s a promise: that no matter where someone is born, they deserve to be seen, served, and supported.
